CHAPTER TEN
I missed him
We ate our dinner in silence when he suddenly placed the wine bottle back on the table.
Adien refill my glass and I mumbled my gratitude which he acknowledge with a nod habang umuupo ulit sa may gilid ko.
The sound of his phone ringing startled me.
“You can take that. I don’t mind.”
Adien turned his gaze at me. “I know. I just don’t want to.”
I rolled my eyes sa jerk response nito.
When his phone keeps ringing, I took a peek dahil nasa harap ko lang nakalapag yung phone nito.
Monique.
Long hair, sultry smile.
Adien cleared his throat.
He didn’t say anything. He just sip his wine but not before I saw him smirking.
Damn him and damn that smirk. And damn that caller ID. Who is that woman anyway?
I sighed and shook my head. I just drink my wine instead of voicing my curiosity.
My mouth flattened as my grip tightened around my glass.
I frowned even more and then decided to test him. “Thank you for this dress.” Turo ko sa suot ko using my sweet innocent smile and tone.
But to my surprise, his gaze lazily traveled from my face to my body before he looked at me straight in the eyes. “Fits you perfectly, the way I know it should.”
His stare makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. Alam kong namumula yung buo kong mukha sa ginawa nitong pagtitig nang mag sink in sakin yung sinabi nito. “The way I know it should?” I parroted.
“You have enough clothes for a week.”
“Week?” ulit ko. “Wait! What week?” I exclaimed, finally finding my wits.
“Didn’t I tell you? The storm is going to last for a week.” He said innocently. Contradicting the sparkle of mischief in his eyes.
A storm?
I frowned. “And you know this is going to happen when you summon me here?” I asked, emphasizing the word “summon” because that is exactly what he did. He summoned me like a freaking king.
He lifted his eyebrow. “How can I predict the storm?”
“News?” I replied incredulously.
“Been busy with the problem on the site to watch the news.”
He just shrugged his shoulder na para bang hindi big deal dito yung nangyayari kaya mas lalo akong nainis.
“But not too busy to buy those clothes?” Bulalas ko dito bago ko pa mapigilan yung bibig ko. I know, I’m being brave with the help of the wine I drink.
Adien went silent for a minute and I can see the tension in his body. At akala ko hindi na ako nito sasagutin when he suddenly said, “I bought those clothes a long time ago.”
Natigilan ako at pagkatapos nagrigudon yung puso ko sa kaba. I can literally hear my heart beating so fast in my chest as he tilted his head to study me.
How long?
Staring at my eyes, he smirked deliberately and slowly as if daring me to ask more.
I gulped hard, ignoring the giant butterfly on my stomach. “Why?” All I managed to ask without choking out dahil sa panunuyo ng bibig at paninikip ng lalamunan ko.
He moved suddenly and I froze when he caressed the side of my face. “You maybe a lot of things Embry but being stupid is not one of them.”
The air seeped out of my lungs, leaving me breathless. I can feel my cheeks heat up even more.
And that’s when Adien’s phone rings again, breaking the thing between us.
And this time, instead of ignoring it. He stands up, having an intention to answer Monique’s call.
But before I could think and before he could put his phone in his ear. I stood up abruptly and grabbed his arm. I took his phone away from him without a second thought.
And for the first time since I met him again, I can see that I rendered him speechless.
And if I’m not this nervous, I might laugh at this rare sight of him.
I gulped. “Stay with me,” I blurted out as my face heats up na para ba akong lalagnatin.
Waiting for him to turn me down, hindi ako tumitingin dito kaya napasinghap ako ng maramdaman ko yung daliri nito sa chin ko. He urged me to look up and when I finally did. He gave me a genuine smile I used to know. “How can I say no to that?” he sweetly asked that makes me want to cry and choke up.
Without saying another word, inalalayan ako nito para umupo bago to naupo sa tabi ko as he intertwined his hands against mine.
It must be the wine or my true feelings, I always ignore. Or it must be the weather or reminiscing about us makes my anger and resolve weakens.
But I chokingly mumbled. “How I missed this.”
How fucking I missed him!
