Chapter Four: The past is never where you think you left it

Devon respected my silence for three days now.

For three days, he never tried to approach me or bothered me at all.

He totally went under the radar.

BUT…….

A knock on my door snapped me out of my reverie.

I sighed, pulling myself up from my bed.

I picked up my phone and looked at the time.

Exactly twelve o’clock.

I walked towards the door and opened it with an exasperated sigh.

And as I expected, I was greeted by a tray of food from room service.

I looked over at Devon’s cottage.

I might not be able to see him but Devon made sure to let his “presence” known.

From breakfast to dinner. Devon made sure I’m well fed.

I let out a sigh of resignation as I picked up the note beside the tray.

My chest constricted when I read his note.

On day one, he wrote a letter, expressing his regret.

On day two, he wrote another letter, asking for forgiveness and another chance.

And now his note is just three words long.

Devon can be really sappy if he wants to.

If all these words are genuine and not just an act to get you.

I shook my head as soon as the negative thought entered my mind.

I heaved a deep sigh and took the tray.

I slammed my door shut and walked towards my bed. I placed the tray at the bedside table and lifted the cover.

Another one of my favourites.

Meat with oyster sauce and heaven & hell cake for dessert.

I was about to dig in when my phone rings.

I frowned and looked at the caller I.D.

Sigrid.

“Another round of interrogation?” I asked in a teasing manner as soon as I picked up her call. “Last night is not enough?”

I heard her laughing on the other side. We’ve been talking for hours about Sigrid’s so-called love life last night. In short, it means Trey’s gorgeous ass.

My best friend is just simply a worrywart, she’s always calling and checking on me.

“Speaking of interrogation, how’s Devon?”

Natigilan ako at nawala yung ngiti sa mga labi ko.  My eyebrow rise in surprise and confusion. “How did you know that he is here?”

I heard a shuffling noise.

“Ahmm, you-o told me-e last night, remember?” She replied in stutter.

For a writer, Sigrid sure is a terrible liar. Well, at least for me.

I guess it’s kind of unfair on Sigrid’s part. After all, I can read her like an open book so lying to me is out of the equation.

I shook my head in disappointment. “No! I didn’t.” I replied as calmly as I could.

“You told me about him!” Sigrid answered in a bit frantic.

I rolled my eyes.

Last night, while I was talking to Sigrid. I especially omit the fact that Devon is here.

And besides, sharp memory is one of my assets. There’s no way I’ll forget that.

“Sigrid!” I warned her. “How did you know that Devon is here?” I repeated, using my firm voice.

I heard her sighing on the other line.

After a few minutes of silence, she told me, “Because I’m the one who told him where to find you.”

“What??” Even though I had a hunch that this talk is going to lead on that direction. Iba pa rin yung impact pag sa mismong bibig na nito nanggaling yung confirmation.

“Why?”

“You need to face him, Armie. It’s time for you and him to settle the score.”

I grind my teeth and run my fingers through my hair out of frustration. “There’s no score to settle. I don’t need to talk to him. I need time and space to breathe! Ano bang mahirap intindihin don?”

“I’m just doing this for you. As your best friend, you need to trust me on this one. You will never be happy unless you face your pain and Devon is the cause of it.” Sigrid said and I could hear the frustration rising in her voice. “You know, Brandon is right, Armie.” She added in an audible tone that I could hardly hear her.

Brandon.

My heart started pounding. My throat tightens.

I gulped hard and gripped my phone tighter. “Stop!” I breathe in, filling my lungs with air. “Stop using Brandon Sigrid! Stop involving him in this shit!” I added frostily.

“But we both know that he’s already involved.”

I could hear the pity in her voice.

“Just fvking stop! It’s not that easy Sigrid! You, of all people should know and understand how I feel! So please stop using him against me!”

“Life is never easy. Take Brandon for example.”

My breath hitched.

I suddenly felt so sick and dizzy.

Sigrid spoke in a soft quiet tone, “Brandon loved you Armie.”

I open my mouth to throw a bitch fit at her but nothing comes out.

Sigrid takes my silence as encouragement. “Face Devon so you can finally be happy.”

Without saying goodbye. I closed my phone and threw it at my pillow.

Brandon.

Pain is twisted in my chest at the thought of him.

I shook my head.

Stop thinking about him, Armie. Don’t go there. Don’t open that door!

I took several deep breaths. I struggle to pull myself together.

For hours, I block everything out.

I’m just sitting on my bed and staring at my wall.

Nahimasmasan lang ako nang may narinig akong sigaw sa labas ng cottage ko.

I shake off my melancholy.

I looked at the tray and then to my phone.

I know that there are no do overs.

And I also know that deep in my heart, Sigrid is right.

For Brandon.

I picked up my phone and searched for Devon’s name.

I started typing “Pick me up at six o’clock later” and hit the send button before I changed my mind.

I decided to end this thread that’s binding us.

Having a meal together is ok but having a relationship with him again is another story.

I took a sigh of resignation.

Devon might be an evil but I’m no saint either.

Come to think of it, Devon’s sin is nothing compared to mine.

It will never be as big and unforgivable as mine.

A beep caught my attention.

I grabbed my phone and looked at the screen.

You will never regret this.

I slumped on the edge of my bed and laughed bitterly.

That’s where you’re wrong, Devon.

I will surely regret this but this time, I’m not the only one who will end up being miserable.

I looked up at the ceiling, a silent tear slid down my face.

Devon, sometimes, ignorance is a bliss.

The past is never where you think you left it.
